Passports and Mexico Entry Requirements for U.S. Children

Be prepared for your international trip by researching entry requirements in order to avoid hassles while traveling. Each country is different, so do your research on the country your visiting, and returning home to, and those you may visit in transit.

  • Regardless of age, each and every traveler arriving in Mexico by air is required to present a valid passport for entry into the country. (Mexico does not require passports to be valid for longer that the anticipated length of the visit.)
  • Children under 18 years of age who are not citizens of Mexico are only required to present a valid passport; other documentation is not necessary during a visit, but require a present proof of parents' authorization to travel.
  • The authorization from the parents (required by law for Mexican nationals only) must be translated into Spanish and legalized by the Mexican embassy in the country where the document was issued. See an example of a letter of authorization to travel.

Leaving and returning to the U.S.

  • The Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative (WHTI) establishes document requirements for travel into the United States from Canada, Mexico, and the Caribbean.
  • Depending on the age of the child(ren), whether or not the child is traveling as a part of an organized group, or whether they are traveling via air, land or sea will determine what travel documents are necessary to re-enter the United States.
